7/27 - This week in the world tech companies like Apple and Google made big money, which made the stock market super happy (aka lots of rich people got richer). Trump’s been teasing new tariffs (extra taxes on stuff from other countries), and everyone’s stressed because that could make things like clothes and electronics cost more. There were also huge protests across the U.S. and Puerto Rico about immigration and healthcare civilians are not staying quiet. On the global side, a bunch of cool spots like mountains in Malawi and rivers in Brazil just got protected as official World Heritage Sites, which means they’ll be taken care of forever. Oh and copper prices crashed (random, but it’s used in tons of tech stuff), and now people are nervous about what that means for the economy. Basically some wins, some drama, and a lot going on.
7/20 - This week was intense. In Europe, wildfires and record heat forced over 50,000 people in Turkey, Greece, and France to evacuate, leaving several injured and some victims from the fires sparked by the heatwave climate change is really hitting. In South Korea, heavy rains triggered landslides that killed at least 17 people, forced over 13,000 evacuations, and flattened homes and campsites, nature doesn’t kid around. Over in Ukraine, fans of democracy are upset the EU condemned a controversial anti-corruption law pushed by Zelenskyy’s government, warning it could kill Ukraine’s hopes of joining the EU unless it’s fixed. On the money front, global markets stayed cautious as Trump’s August 1st tariff deadline looms. It could ripple into everything we pay for, but for now investors are holding tight. And in Gaza, famine is worsening; thousands are starving even when food is blocked at borders, prompting global protests and calls for urgent action. The entire world feels tense and fragile right now.
7/13 - A tragic situation happened in Gaza where 67 people were killed when Israeli fire hit a crowd waiting for U.N. aid, which made the already-bad crisis there even worse. Over here in the U.S., the stock market is popping off thanks to tech companies, but new tariff talk might mess that up. China and the EU had a major meeting about trade and tech stuff, which might help bring down prices on things we actually care about. In Vietnam, a crazy storm sank a tourist boat in Halong Bay and 35 people died, which is terrifying, we have thoughts and prayers for the families of the victims. Also, countries at a NATO meeting agreed to spend more on defense and basically level up global security. It’s been a wild week with a lot going on around the world, so stay tuned.
7/6 - Earlier this month the horror that was the sexual violence against the women of Tigray was brought to light. Eritrean soldiers their rapists are attempting to make all Tigrayan women infertile in an attempt to end their ethnic group. Women carry their agony with them even after the fact, seeing as the inhumane soldiers inserted physical objects into their uterus such as hand written notes, rusted screws, metal spikes, and horrific rubbish. This is genocide the women and children of Tigray are facing and attention must be brought to them quickly in order to ensure change within their community and safety to their citizens. As well as consequence for the Eritrean soldiers who inflict this unfathomable pain on them.
6/29- Kids are on summer break but the world never sleeps so lets dive into to this weeks update. Trump recently passed the “Big Beautiful Bill” which would let the president shut down the border fast, and makes it easier to deport people. The bill also includes big changes to taxes, cutting them for wealthy people and businesses, but possibly raising them for lower-income families over time. Trump has talked about removing or replacing parts of Obamacare too, which would make healthcare more private and expensive for some. He also wants to limit certain college loan programs and make it harder to work in fields like medicine without private funding. Supporters think it will boost the economy and security, but critics say it could hurt working-class people, immigrants, and students trying to build a future.
6/15 - The world has been busy this past week so lets get in to our weekly news update. Tensions between the U.S. and Iran hit a new level. Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites, and Iran responded with missile and drone attacks. Trump declared that he ‘obliterated' Iran’s nuclear sites however the Iran military says otherwise claiming on twitter that “The Islamic Republic of Iran’s nuclear program remains fully intact”. Nearby country, Qatar says it intercepted Iran’s missile attack with no causalities. Iran’s top leader warned that if the U.S. attacks, the consequences will be huge and permanent. The White House is already prepping, sending more troops, protecting embassies, and getting people out just in case. This tension is messing with money too: oil prices are rising fast, stock markets dropped, and people pulled billions out of investments because no one knows what’s next. Meanwhile, European leaders are trying to calm things down and restart nuclear talks with Iran. Basically, it’s a major standoff, and the whole world’s watching to see what happens.
6/8 - Its been a while and we have a bunch to catch up on so lets see what’s been happening around the world lately. June 13th marked a major turning point in the Israel-Iran conflict as Israel launched “Operation Rising Lion”. A bomb operation that struck over 100 sites including Iran’s nuclear facility. In return Iran started “Operation True Promise III” which fired 150+ missiles and over 100 drones on Israel resulting in many civilian casualties. On June 6th ICE carried out numerous raids in LA, suggesting 100-300 individuals were detained by ICE. In response the people are holding “No Kings” protests against the escalated federal immigration operations.
5/25 - Ongoing conflicts like the war in Ukraine continue to dominate headlines. Recent reports highlight that there might be potential escalation because of attacks on Russian bomber fleets. Karen Read’s retrial has begun with new evidence in the loop. If you’re not in the mix Karen Read is an accused murderer being charged with man-slaughter of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe. In the retrial there was a testimony of a “black blob” seen at the scene of the crime and potential DNA evidence on O’Keefe’s sweatshirt. More news about the ongoing case will be coming next week so stay tuned!
5/18 - There’s a lot to uncover from this weeks news so lets get to it. First in terms of new policies in America, President Trump will start designating cartels, meaning the government gives cartels a special label, like calling them terrorists or dangerous criminals so they can take stronger action against them and reduce the amount of drug cartels in America. With the ongoing war between Israel and Gaza, Iran claimed they would hold the U.S. accountable for any Israeli strikes on its nuclear sites. In an immigrant detention center in Anson, Texas detainees were spelling out the letters S-O-S with their bodies. New president of Germany makes a statement against Trump warning that he is pushing the democracies to their edge and single handedly destroying the post World War II handbook.
5/11 - Let’s unwrap this past week’s news. A new pope was chosen, to many’s surprise he was born in Chicago, Illinois. Pope Leo XIV being chosen was a relief to many as he is just as inclusive if not more than Pope Francis. President Trump proposed to rename Veterans Day to Victory Day in honor of the day America and it's allies won World War I, which has received mixed responses from the public however many veterans feel as though it is disrespect and do not support this change. In terms of education the Trump Administration has cut funding for Sesame street a show previously known for its entertainment and helping young children develop a basic education, many are heartbroken by this news. In global news the India-Pakistan war is escalating, India launched an attack on Pakistan after Kashmir massacre and Pakistan is now openly saying they will respond to these attacks. See you next week for more updates!
5/4 - The world never sleeps so let’s dive into this week’s latest news. In the United States the Trump Administration has registered that any immigrant who self deports themselves will receive a check of $1000. Isreali government has approved to increase military forces and plan to capture and occupy the entire Gaza strip, they are currently working on escalating the war and expanding military reinforcements. The College of Cardinals are working on electing the new pope which seems to be a long and anxious process. In terms of the Russia and Ukriane war Putin was spotted visiting North Korea and increased military efforts in the Baltic Sea region. These new war efforts have everyone on edge.
4/27 - This week was a whirlwind of news, so let’s break it down. A major power outage hit the Iberian Peninsula on April 28, leaving Spain and Portugal in the dark for about ten hours. The blackout disrupted transportation, telecommunications, and emergency services, with at least seven deaths in Spain and one in Portugal linked to the outage. In the U.S., President Trump marked 100 days into his second term by rolling back over 140 environmental protections, pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Agreement again, and cutting climate funding across the board . On the international stage, tensions escalated between India and Pakistan after a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22 killed at least 26 tourists.
4/20 - Here’s your quick catch-up on what’s been happening this week. The world just said goodbye to Pope Francis, who passed away at 88 after battling pneumonia. He was known for trying to modernize the Catholic Church and connect more with young people, so his loss is a big deal. In the U.S., things got spicy in Texas where a Libertarian group filed a resolution calling for Trump’s impeachment again, this time over immigration and breaking rules in office. Meanwhile, a new global study says the Earth’s population might actually be way higher than we thought… like, possibly 12 billion people instead of the usual 8 billion estimate, because so many people in remote areas aren’t counted properly. And in the coolest science news, researchers in China found a perfectly preserved dinosaur embryo inside a fossilized egg. Yes, an actual baby dino. It’s giving Jurassic Park but real!
4/13 - This week’s news has been wild, so here’s everything you need to know. Trump’s new tariffs are shaking up the economy, with the stock market taking a hit and countries like the UK and Australia getting hit with surprise taxes on things like medicine and tech. Over 300 international students had their visas revoked in the U.S., mostly for joining pro-Palestinian protests on campus, which sparked major debates about free speech. The GOP also pushed through a bill that would require voters to show proof of citizenship in federal elections—supporters say it’s about security, but critics think it could make voting harder for some people. In science news, researchers just brought back dire wolves (yes, the extinct kind) by cloning ancient DNA, and now three pups named Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi exist in real life. And after all that, Trump’s stock and the market overall dropped even more, which has a lot of people watching their wallets.
4/6 - Trump is all over the news again. He just dropped a new trade plan with a 10% tariff on pretty much everything the U.S. imports, and countries like China are not happy—they’re already planning to fight back. He also signed orders to bring back coal power (yes, like the old-school kind), which has climate people freaking out. On top of that, Trump told Israel he thinks the U.S. should take over Gaza, which sparked some major backlash. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court backed his policy to keep deporting certain migrants, and even though he promised to end New York’s traffic tolls, that plan is kinda stuck. The new gold visa cards have taken immigration by storm as 1000 have already been sold. For those of you who don’t know gold visa cards are cards selling at $5,000,000 each granting permanent American citizenship to any who buy it. Basically, it’s been a wild week in politics.
